Traditional theoretical foundations and modern medical basis for treating osteoarthritis with TCM

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease influenced by factors such as genetics, development, stress imbalance, trauma and endocrine disorders. It leads to pain, swelling and stiffness, affecting a person’s ability to move freely. In TCM, osteoarthritis falls under the category of „Bi“ syndrome (painful obstruction syndrome), commonly referred to as „Gu Bi“ (bone impediment) in clinical practice. The fundamental treatment method for knee osteoarthritis in TCM is to tonify and replenish liver and kidney, as sufficient kidney essence and strong kidney qi ensure robust bones. Recent clinical observations indicate that Zuo Gui Pill (Zuo Gui Wan), originating from the „Jing Yue Quan Shu“, is highly effective in treating and recovering from osteoarthritis. Additionally, acupuncture effectively alleviates osteoarthritis-related pain and morning stiffness, maintains and improves joint function, reduces joint swelling, slows disease progression and enhances the quality of life, with most patients experiencing favorable outcomes.
This course will use osteoarthritis as an example to introduce the recent TCM treatments centered on Zuo Gui Pill and acupuncture. After including the latest findings from TCM scientific research, the traditonal theoretical foundations and modern medical basis for treating osteoarthritis with TCM which provide new insights for clinical medication and acupuncture practices will systematically explained.
